“The Ghanaian Dream Child”
It is the dream of every parent to see his children prosper someday and mother Ghana is no different. Indeed, that is the pride of parenthood. As responsible parents go the mile to provide for the needs of their dream child so do they expect from them when it comes to learning (a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning. Ambrose et al, 2010, p.3).
There is no doubt that mother Ghana is exceedingly providing for the ‘Ghanaian dream child’. Talk about, the free feeding for students, free education provided, and books, just to mention but a few. However, one could ask if that is enough or if the needs of the people met? Does mother Ghana fit into the class of responsible parents? ‘3y3 as3m s3b3’ that is to say it is proverbial.
What is mother Ghana’s expectation from the Ghanaian dream child? Certainly, to have been learnt, in other words, a change through experience, increased in potential, performance improved, and ability to unlearn and learn.
The saddest aspect is that educators are aggressively keen to seeking for one aspect (results from final exams) with the neglect of the others (true learning) as a result of this teachers are forced to write exams for learners to pass. So, on true grounds, educators are aware of the poor performances of learners. On the other hand, we see learners coming out with flying colors after their final exams.
What do we gain when there is a gross number of passes yet students are not educated indeed? Is mother Ghana looking forward to seeing quack doctors, teachers who teach wrong, unqualified professionals occupying positions in the next generation? Have we ever envisaged the future generation?
To me, the greatest legacy one can leave for his child is not money nor other material things but rather, true education (“more than pursuing a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being and with the whole period of existence possible to man.” E.G. White)
The dream Ghanaian child cries out!
Can you have love enough to make amends?
Is there still a chance that you could start again?
Have you learnt your lessons?
It is never too late!
